A communicative module for students with some prior knowledge of Russian and of the culture both of Russia and of the countries in which Russian is the second language.
This module aims to: -
- Revise and consolidate your grammatical knowledge of Russian
- Introduce some new grammatical structures
- Extend your general vocabulary and the vocabulary related to your own field of scientific study
- Improve your oral and written communication skills
To be eligible for this module you need to have done one of the following: -
- Successfully completed Russian Level 2
- Gained a high grade at Russian GCSE or gained an A/S level qualification in Russian
- Have already achieved the equivalent level by other means

Learning outcomes
This module will equip you with the ability to:
- Communicate in spoken and written Russian on a variety of subjects
- Discuss some issues of general concern in contemporary Russia
- Read some popular Russian scientific texts on aspects of mathematics, physics and chemistry
Indicative core content
Study the first five chapters of Olga E. Kagan, Anna S. Kudyma, Frank J. Miller, Russian: From Intermediate to Advanced (Routledge, London and New York, 2015).
- Chapter 1. Verbs taking the genitive; use of prepositions to express time; use of the verbal aspects in the present, past and future; direct and indirect speech.
- Chapter 2. Formation of abstract nouns; conditional sentences; the use of aspects in the infinitive.
- Chapter 3. Verbs taking the accusative; how to express concessive clauses (starting with 'although'); use of aspect in the imperative.
- Chapter 4. More verbs taking the accusative; verbs of motion without prefixes; how to express cause and effect relations.
- Chapter 5. Verbs taking the dative; prefixed verbs of motion; how to express purpose.

Learning and teaching approach
Weekly in-class activities cover reading, writing, listening and speaking. Learning will involve pair work, group work, and individual tasks and will include critical evaluation of texts, audio and video material. A range of weekly homework tasks give you the opportunity to revise and consolidate knowledge and skills.
All pieces of coursework are marked and returned within two weeks. Detailed feedback is provided for each individual section of the coursework, giving the correct answer along with suggestions for improvement. Generic feedback on each individual piece of coursework is also provided in class.
Assessment
- Coursework: Reading comprehension, grammar and writing task 140-160 words (15%)
- Examination: 1-hour in-class test - listening comprehension, grammar and writing task 120-140 words (15%)
- Coursework: 2-3 minute Podcast (20%)
- Examination: Reading comprehension, grammar and writing task 180-200 words (20%)
- Practical: 12-15 minute Oral Exam including dialogue and questions (30%)

- 7.5 ECTS points awarded on successful completion of the module.
- Available to take for credit towards your degree where your department allows. Also available for extra-credit.
- You must be prepared to attend all classes and and undertake approximately 3 hours of private study each week in addition to the assessment.
