If you have never studied Mandarin Chinese before, or have only the most rudimentary knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, then you should enrol on this course which aims to provide you with a thorough grounding in the sounds of Mandarin Chinese, as well as some basic speech patterns that will equip you to deal with everyday situations. If you are unsure whether this course or our Post-Beginners course is more suitable for you please do contact our Mandarin Chinese Coordinator pre-erolment.
Taught one evening a week for 2 terms, this is a lively and fun course that will introduce you to the basics in speaking and understanding Mandarin Chinese.
Topics covered will include basic greetings, the family, likes and dislikes, food, and shopping.
The focus of the course will be on speaking and listening, but you will be also taught the rudiments of Chinese script, after which you can choose whether to continue learning Chinese characters or concentrate on learning the language through the medium of Latinised Chinese.
You will learn some basic Chinese grammar points and understand the unique features of Chinese language and its fundamental differences from the English language.
The teacher will also add some interesting introductory content on Chinese geography, culture and history, depending on students’ progress.

Course Information
Your Tutor
Mr Fei Wang is experienced in teaching Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language at Imperial College for over a decade. He was born and brought up in China and has worked as a Chinese language journalist and teacher in China and the UK.
His teaching methodology makes classroom teaching a lot of fun and enhances the learning process effectively by applying diverse exercises to teaching.
His previous media working background enables him to develop multimedia teaching materials to assist students’ learning. As a consequence, his students’ pronunciation and intonation are always exceptionally good.
He also naturally imparts a lot of Chinese cultural elements into language teaching and makes the language learning process more interesting and interactive.
What course level should I choose?
Choosing the right language level
It is very important to book onto a course which is a good match for your level of ability, and we aim to make the process of deciding which is the right course level for you as simple as possible.
If you are a complete beginner you should, of course, enrol on our Beginners Mandarin Chinese course.
If you have some experience in the language you wish to study please first review our course descriptions to try to identify the course level which should be most suitable for you. Especially if you are out of practice in a language, or have been out of formal education for a while, please be reasonably sure and realistic about your level of proficiency prior to proceeding with enrolment.
Please contact our Mandarin Chinese Coordinator, Dr Ruth Herd, with any questions about your level, at ruth.herd@imperial.ac.uk
