Classroom course at South Kensington
For applicants who already have some experience of speaking French at a basic level, and those who have completed a Beginner’s course at Imperial College or a similar course elsewhere
This course will provide you with a general foundation in the language and culture of French speaking countries so that you can deal with a range of predictable, everyday communicative situations, interacting at a basic level, orally and in writing.
Upon completion of this course you should be able to perform at Level A1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Our approach following communicative and active learning methodologies ensures that you engage with a wide range of tasks and activities covering all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). These activities will include pair work and groupwork; discovery and formulation of grammatical rules; work with texts and audio-visual material.
You will be able to respond to and produce a beginner’s range of spoken language in very familiar contexts, answer to and produce simple written texts such as messages and emails. You will be able to talk about yourself, to describe your home, work environment, interests and to express opinions and preferences, making comparisons and suggestions and using present, future, past, and conditional tenses. In addition, you will demonstrate intercultural awareness in your handling of simple everyday social interactions in French.
On this course, you will cover the following linguistic structures: present tense; imperative; future; introduction to conditional; past tense (perfect); personal and object pronouns; articles; possessives; agreement of nouns and adjectives; prepositions; expressions of quantity; impersonal forms.
These linguistic structures will be applied to the following topics: simple social interactions; everyday life and objects; work and professions; the home and the family; holidays and leisure time, travel, eating and drinking; giving and understanding information; opinions; features of modern life; selected cultural areas and personalities of the French-speaking countries.
The lecturer will inform you of any recommended textbooks and useful resources at the start of the course.
