There is something very special about learning a traditional skill like stone carving in an environment which is so dedicated to the continuation and advancement of the craft. City & Guilds of London Art School has an unbroken tradition of teaching sculpture, stone carving and woodcarving since 1879, and today, our stone carving graduates continue to work on the world’s great cathedrals, buildings and monuments.

This beginners course in carving gives you a unique opportunity to try out these skills for yourself.  Using close-ups and fragments of William Morris designs, this course will instruct you in the art of carving natural shapes and animal motifs onto slate in low relief, giving you a basic instruction in how to handle carving tools and materials.

As well as being guided through the fundamentals of historic relief carving and tool use, you will make your very own low relief carving through the course, and will have ample opportunities to experiment to discover the joys of stone carving.

Join us and become a part of the great tradition of British stone carving!

Classroom Course

This course will be taught face-to-face in the classrooms at the City and Guilds of London Art School, which is located in Kennington.

Founded in 1854, the City and Guilds of London Art School has a long historical association with Imperial College, through both institutions' links with the City and Guilds Institute. For the Art School this link continued until 1971, when it became an independent charitable trust. For Imperial College, the association with the City and Guilds Institute, also known as City and Guilds College, continued until 2001 when the City and Guilds College became one of the constituent institutions that formed Imperial College as we know it today.

The City and Guilds of London Art School is located very near Kennington Underground Station (map), in a row of beautiful late-eighteenth century Georgian town houses.

Course Information

Course Programme (subject to possible modification)

Course Programme Each week we will expand our understanding and practice of our teachnical skill through practical work, focussing on carving a slate relief panel. This will help us to develop our ability to handle stone carving tools and be sensitive to the stone we are carving, but the pace of development will, of course, be an individual journey, and so much of the tuition will involve Yohan giving individual advice to each participant working in the studio.

There will also be groups demonstrations and discussions, all in a friendly and supportive environment.

It was while completing a law degree at Lancaster, that Yohan Le Peuch discovered a passion for sculptural form, and set to work finding ways to learn the craft. Enrolling at Wimbledon College of Arts and later at the City and Guilds of London Art School  that he refined that interest to focus on carviong and the interaction of three dimensional image and captioned text, drawing influences from memes and comic books.

The subject matter of Yohan Le Peuch’s work draws inspiration from myths, fairy tales, and ancient history. By looking at the imagery within our shared myths and our human fascination with storytelling, his work seeks to distil the archetypes used into sculptural form.
