Speaking and listening provision

We offer speaking and listening courses, workshops and events  for Imperial College London students, academics and researchers to help you communicate science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine effectively.

Listening and speaking provision

Courses

Our four-week courses will allow you to build and develop your oral ​communication skills in small classes through focussed, iterative practice activities with space for reflection, constructive peer review and teacher feedback. These courses run for four sessions of one hour per week, allowing you to build and develop a specific area of your oral communication or listening skills over the four, linked sessions.

Workshops

Our one-hour workshops are highly interactive and have a clear communication focus. You will work with others to practise specific skills and receive feedback from your peers and the teacher. These workshops have been developed to allow you the flexibility to choose single workshops to fit your specific needs, or to 'stack' the workshops and build your own portfolio of practice opportunities.​

Events

Our events are an exciting suite of one-hour speaking and listening practice opportunities. They are designed to allow you the chance to rehearse for real-life Imperial events in which you are likely to participate and to develop your confidence and communication skills in a supportive space.​
You will interact with individuals from across the College and learn about the range of research currently being conducted at Imperial.

Self-study

We have developed a range of self-study modules to develop your speaking and listening skills at your own pace and in your own time.

Drop-ins and consultations

If you would like to discuss with a CfAE tutor how to improve your speaking, you can book an online drop-in or consultation.

Our drop-ins and consultations run during term time and are bookable up to two weeks in advance.

For doctoral students

We offer technical speaking courses specifically designed to support doctoral students at key points in the doctoral journey: the early stages; the ESA oral and a 2nd-year course which eases students into confident and competent STEMM communication to a live audience.​
