Prof Jorge Almeida Guimarães, CEO of EMBRAPII

Abstract

“Embrapii – the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Research and Innovation – is a Social Organization connected to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Comunications (MCTIC),to the Ministry of Education (MEC) and to the Ministry of Health (MS). Embrapii´s presentation at the Sustainable Gas Research & Innovation (2018) conference will focus on two main aspects. Firstly it will present the Organization´s operating model that enables quickness, flexibility and reduced risk in supporting companies’ RD&I projects. Embrapii operates through cooperation with public or private technological and scientific research institutions that are accredited as Embrapii Research Units. These Units focus on entrepreneurial demands and innovation projects that are in the pre-competitive stage and the research institutions are acknowledged for their excellence, technological focus and the ability to meet companies´ RD&I demands. The second part of the presentation will highlight the main results achieved in industrial R&D projects and also discuss the new institutional partnerships that have been signed between Embrapii and various agencies in the Brazilian and international innovation ecosystem.”

Biography

Jorge Almeida Guimarães, presently is the President of EMBRAPII, The Brazilian Agency for Industrial Research and Innovation, holds a Ph.D. degree from Federal University of São Paulo and a post-doctoral in Biochemistry, at the National Institute of Health (NIH) – USA. He has held teaching and research positions in several Brazilian Universities, including a Full Professor at the Federal Universities of Rio de Janeiro, Federal Fluminense, and Rio Grande do Sul. In different periods, he worked as Visiting Research Fellow at Henry Ford Hospital, Cornell University Medical College and at the University of Arizona. He has published 170 scientific articles in international journals and three dozen of other texts about science policy in Brazil. He was Chief Executive Officer – CEO in the Science and Technology of Government Agencies in Brazil. He is recipient of several prizes and awards an example of Brazilian National Great Cross of the Order of Scientific Merit.
