Dr. David Daniels, Chief Energy Modeler, U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Abstract

The U.S. Energy Information Administration is completing work on an ambitious new model of the global upstream and midstream oil and gas markets, to be incorporated for the first time into the International Energy Outlook 2019.  This talk describes the GHySMo model, demonstrates some of its capabilities, and shows some early results with a research version of the model.  Suggestions for next steps and ideas for improvement are welcome.

Biography

David Daniels is the Chief Energy Modeler at the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), where he works to ensure internal consistency across all of EIA’s energy models, including the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) and the World Energy Projection System (WEPS). He advises EIA on energy analysis methods and serves as an internal consultant on new model development efforts. In his role at EIA, Dr. Daniels serves on the international advisory panel of the Sustainable Gas Institute at Imperial College London, is the alternate U.S. delegate to the International Energy Agency’s ETSAP executive committee, and participates on the steering committee of Stanford University’s Energy Modeling Forum study on North American energy trade and integration (EMF 34).

Prior to joining EIA, David Daniels was the Chief Scientist at Digital Sandbox (now Haystax), a critical infrastructure risk management software company, where he developed the terrorism risk analysis methodology used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to allocate over $20B in state and urban area grant funding. He has also worked as a consultant, both at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he primarily acted as technical advisor to DARPA, and at The Boston Consulting Group, a commercial strategy consulting firm. His academic background is in high energy particle physics, earning his M.Sc. at Oxford and Ph.D. at Harvard.
