Global engagement
A growing aspect of our work contributes to developing modelling expertise for the decarbonisation of energy supply chains. Our main focus is on developing countries with the need to expand existing or invest in new energy infrastructure. Energy systems are complex, so our work is almost always part of much larger multiple-stakeholder collaborations.
Through training workshops to capacity-build local expertise, we collectively explore different aspects of modelling methodology and discuss how to tailor the models to better represent each country’s energy system.
The input from regional and local specialists is key to incorporating their country or region development plans and energy security priorities into the scenarios and model assumptions. Countries we are active in include Kenya, Qatar, Zambia, Laos PDR and Vietnam.
We contribute energy systems modelling training through the following collaborations:
Climate Compatible Growth
The Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme is funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to support investment in sustainable energy and transport systems to meet development priorities in the Global South.
CCG provides research and global public goods. These are to help countries develop economic strategies, plans, and policies to attract investment into low-carbon growth opportunities across multiple sectors. These are to support growth aspirations and better meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The programme brings together some of the UK’s leading research organisations and partners them with local researchers, governments, Multinational Banks (MDBs), and International Organizations (IOs) to identify appropriate low-carbon development pathways. This includes assessing the most fit-for-purpose policy, regulatory, market models, and risk mitigation options to implement them. The programme and its partners will develop a range of open-source tools, models, and datasets that will be global public goods available to all countries.
UK PACT
UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) is a programme funded by the UK Government. UK PACT supports countries that strive to overcome barriers to clean growth and have high emissions reduction potential to accelerate their climate change mitigation efforts.
UK PACT is a flagship programme under the UK’s International Climate Finance (ICF) portfolio. The programme is jointly governed and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The UK is committed to tackling climate change and is investing £11.6bn via ICF over the five years to March 2026.
QEERI
Working with the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) to create a model of Qatar’s energy system. The simulation will be used to assist in the development of long-term infrastructure planning and climate change mitigation policies.
The project intends to provide Qatar with a cutting-edge instrument of the same calibre and standard as employed by leading governments globally and in accordance with Qatar’s ever-ambitious commitment to carbon emission objectives, which would need a transformation of the country’s entire energy system, including industry, transportation, electricity production, and buildings.
