Quantum Technology Innovations Programme
The EPSRC Quantum Systems Engineering Skills & Training Hub follows a strong entrepeneurial tradition at Imperial College by providing a mandatory module in Quantum Technology Innovations (QTIP) in the first year of the QSE training programme. QTIP is a tailor-made intensive programme in entrepreneurship and innovation provided by the Imperial Business School to encourage students to develop enterprising mindsets, to innovate ideas and to commercialise highly specialised new products.
Developed especially for the EPSRC QSE Hub by Dr Christopher Corbishley of Imperial Business School, QTIP offers lectures, workshops, case studies and hands-on team-based work. The week-long intensive course covers a wide range of knowledge needed to bring new quantum technology to market, such as the difference between market pull and technology push, the product life-cycle, intellectual property laws and market segmentation. In addition, students learn advanced prototyping, patent searching and filing, fundraising and how to build strong client-consultant relationship. Students also work in teams to develop and pitch a business idea to a panel whilst being guided and tutored by experienced venture coaches.
QTIP is taught at Imperial’s state of the art Enterprise Lab and in 2017, the course involved two afternoon visits to the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace in White City and to Deep Science Ventures in Shoreditch. Students were taught by in-house experts from Imperial’s Business School and the Dyson School of Engineering as well as from CERN idea square and M-Squared Lasers.
Many thanks to EPSRC for sponsoring this training.
