Stage 1: Completing an application

Please complete the online application form located at the bottom of this page. Alternatively you can visit this webpage to access a full-screen version of the application form.

Before submitting an application, please take the time to familiarise yourself with the minimum academic qualifications and the requirements of the project(s) you are interested in. If you are seeking a studentship, please ensure you read carefully the guidance under 'funding eligibility' on the programme webpage.

If you have difficulty using the form, and have any questions, please contact j.tate@imperial.ac.uk Alternatively if you need addressing any confidential questions before you apply you can use our anonymous expression of interest form

Stage 2: The CDT Interview

Within 2-3 weeks, you should have received a reply. If the reply is positive, you will be invited to a thirty-minute interview with the admissions panel at Imperial College London via Microsoft Teams.

The purpose of this interview is to evaluate your motivation for studying for a PhD in Nuclear Energy via the CDT. You will be asked questions about some fundamental aspects of nuclear energy and about the CDT model. We will also discuss with your research interests and any additional support you may require.

Stage 3: PhD Matching phase

Within 1-2 weeks, you will be informed of the outcome. If you are successful, we will arrange interviews with appropriate supervisors based upon the information you provided about your project choices and research interests. This interview will be more technically-focused.

You are not required at this stage to make a formal application to the university where the project interview takes place.

Please note that this interview can take place at any of the partner universities, depending on the choice of project and research interests. The PhD interviews should have taken place within 3-5 weeks of being informed of the outcome of your first interview.

Stage 4: PhD admission

Within 1-2 weeks, you will be informed of the outcome of a PhD interview. You will be allowed up to three opportunities to interview for separate PhD projects: if you are not successful in any of them, you will not be able to join the CDT as this is the last year the programme runs.

If you are successful in one or more PhD interviews, you will be offered to take up the project and thus a position on the CDT in the following October. If you accept, you will be referred to the relevant administrator at the university your PhD project is based, who will then inform you of the PhD admissions process at that university.

N.B. While we strive to complete these actions within the timeframes specified above, the possibility of unforeseen circumstances mean we cannot guarantee their strict adherence. If you would like to be updated on your application, please do get in touch with a member of our support team.
