Vera Pader, Former PhD student (Edwards group)
The CMBI is an inspiring scientific environment because of the many research groups working on diverse yet complementary areas of bacteriology. As a Ph.D. student I have benefited hugely from working with other research groups in the Centre, as well as my own supervisor.
In addition to the research, the CMBI provides excellent training in diverse techniques, whilst the many opportunities to present my work has greatly enhanced my communication skills.
The students run their own seminar series and social activities, which creates a really good community spirit. As I move towards an independent research career, I really appreciate the opportunity to supervise more junior students, enabling me to learn key skills that allow me to manage both people and time.

I completed the MRes in Biomedical Research (Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection) in 2012. I was awarded a Centre-funded studentship and started my PhD in October 2013 with Dr Abigail Clements; I wanted to stay in the CMBI as it is a great place to study!
The Centre is multidisciplinary, supportive and well equipped to investigate all areas of bacterial pathogenesis. There are a wealth of opportunities to learn about other people’s research and collaborate with other labs.
I am currently writing up my PhD thesis and have just started a Research Assistant position in the CMBI, with Dr Despoina Mavridou, with whose group I worked during my PhD.
