The Imperial College CMS Group has a postgraduate studentship available to work on upgrades to the CMS experiment at the LHC.

The Imperial group has long standing interests in the CMS upgrades including the Outer Tracker, with substantial ongoing efforts developing new electronics, detector modules and readout systems. Of crucial importance will be the ability to reconstruct particle trajectories in extremely dense environments at the full 40 MHz crossing rate, using FPGAs, for use in the Level-1 trigger.

The student will contribute significantly to these activities, including work on software or firmware, and hardware, and should have an interest in future physics exploitation.

Projects include:

  • implementation of hardware-based tracking algorithms for both detector commissioning and triggering;
  • performance testing and evaluation of a major slice of the new Outer Tracker backend electronics system;
  • design, development and optimisation of the online software suite necessary for system control and commissioning

We are looking for a student with a good quality first degree in physics, with a strong interest in and aptitude for electronics and particle physics instrumentation. Good computing skills, e.g. experience with C++, are highly desirable.

The studentship covers a maintenance bursary, similar to standard STFC studentships, and all fees. It is likely that the student will have the opportunity to spend extended periods at CERN, for which travel costs will be paid.
