TOPOLOGICAL QUANTUM MATTER
Topological quantum matter is a name for the phases of matter that exhibit robust ground state degeneracy. Topological quantum matter is of great interest to a number of fields in physics, particularly the field of quantum information; topological computation is an interesting platform for the physical realisation of a quantum computer which is robust to local errors. The study of topological quantum matter involves discovering and engineering complex, but physically realisable systems, which are capable of supporting non-abelian anyons (the building blocks of topological quantum computers).

In my PhD I am working on discovering and analysing interesting toy models for such topological phases of matter, in particular with an eye to finding physically realisable models, which are capable of universal quantum computation.
